The White Piece of Paper
Whenever I meet new people and get around to telling them I’m a composer, the reaction is usually, “That’s so exciting!” or “How interesting!” or “So cool!” or “I’m jealous!” And it’s true - I reap some unique rewards and satisfaction from my line of work, but there’s also the anxiety, and tumult, and fear. This quote explains it all - why I procrastinate, why I get stuck in funks, why it’s not the romantic walk in the park so many people think it is. That said, we muddle through the 99% of self-inflicted torture in search of and in hope for that 1% of exquisite, almost divine inspiration, and when we brush up against that - it’s how we know it’s all worth it.
“I love writing but hate starting. The page is awfully white and it says, “You may have fooled some of the people some of the time but those days are over, giftless. I’m not your agent and I’m not your mommy, I’m a white piece of paper, you wanna dance with me?” and I really, really don’t. I’ll go peaceable-like.”—
